  Greentop Planters - Soils

‘Soil’ for planters is ideally composed of sterile medium with good water holding and drainage characteristics. We recommend two soil mixes for depths of 1 foot to 3 feet; one that is light in weight and the other moderately heavy.

Fafard #52 is a good lightweight mix that weighs 40lbs for 2.8 cu. Ft. and has 60% bark and 20% peat and 20% Perlite. This is a well drained mix that requires bottom drainage or use of our Green Drain system to prevent soil saturation for extended periods of time. The saturated weight of Fafard 52 swells from 14lbs to 38 lbs/cu. ft., which is an important consideration when determining acceptable roof loads.

We recommend Rooflite Intensive when a heavier soil weight is acceptable. It weights 45 lbs. per cu. ft. with average moisture content and 78lbs. per cu. ft. at full saturation, with good air and water-holding characteristics. The organic characteristics of this ‘soil’ allow roots to anchor and fully stabilize in the planter.
